Last week, we held our annual internal networking events – Broadening Horizons!

We began the night with dinner and introductory speeches from our President, Daryl and Alumni Relations director, Madhusudan (Madhu).

Following that, we introduced a new segment into this year’s edition of Broadening Horizons. We invited three distinguished guests, Madanjit Singh, Vincent Toong and Leon Qiu on stage to share on how undergraduates should differentiate themselves from each other and also tips to find their purpose in the working world.

Our panellists were candid with their responses and provided fresh, insightful thoughts for our participants to ponder upon.

  • Madanjit Singh is the Managing Director for South East Asia at SAP Concur.
  • Vincent Toong is an Audit Partner at Ernst & Young.
  • Leon Qiu is the CEO and Founder of Daung Capital, a micro-financing company financing the working people of Myanmar.

Apart from the panel discussion, we also had a short time of networking amongst the SMU Alumni, friends of SMU and our undergraduates. We believe that Broadening Horizons helps to provide a platform for our members and their invited friends to network professionally and connect with industry professionals. Many of our participants connected with the invited alumni after. We’re elated to see many of the alumni being so proactive about mentoring and even wanting to guide our undergraduates outside of their own time!

The industries represented ranged from FMCG, Banking and Finance, Consulting and Technology.

Here’s some of our TMC members and their reflections from the event:

As a year 1 still trying to navigate my way in SMU, I am really thankful for the opportunity to be at Broadening Horizons and have honestly learnt so much from the sharing by fellow alumni and working professionals. The session never felt intimidating or transactional because of how genuine the conversations were, and I was touched by the sincerity of the seniors in sharing about their experiences. It was truly an enlightening evening for me, and I look forward to the next edition!

Christine Ng, 3rd Circle Mentee

Broadening Horizons was an authentic platform for genuine interactions to come about. It was truly an eye-opener – I got to hear a lot of great perspectives and insights from sincere and willing alumni.

The event was well-run and it achieved the informal, casual atmosphere that made the environment friendly and conducive for networking. Especially for those who aren’t familiar or comfortable with the networking process, this was a good opportunity for a start!

Ian Yeap, Odyssey 2020 Co-Chairman

We also invited our TMC members to bring along a +1 for the event and this initiative is a step closer to impacting the lives of every single student in SMU! We love to involve more people in our Circle and hope to have more SMU undergraduates joining us in future.

A big thank you to everyone who help make Broadening Horizons 2019 a success! Thank you to our alumni guests and non-SMU guests for spending the evening with us, embracing the spirit of mentoring!

Thank you also to the Committee members and Circle members who helped with the set-up. Our sincere gratitude to the SMU Office of Alumni Relations for their unending support thus far!

Broadening Horizons is the last of TMC’s formal event this year. However, our mentors and mentees will continue to meet up informally over coffee, dinner and drinks! We’ll also have a Christmas party at the end of the year for the entire Circle too.

The next formal event to come is Compass@Campus happening in January 2020 and also Odyssey 2020 on February 7. See you then!
