In continuation from Navigating Crossroads in March earlier this year, TMC introduced the latest edition of our Alumni Networking Night themed “Broadening Horizons”. TMC’s ANN aims to provide a platform to promote professional networking among alumni and for our members to expand their professional network – all in the spirit of mentorship within Singapore Management University!

Our President, Tan Xin Hao, first welcomed alumni and members from TMC in an opening address. In his speech, Xin Hao further emphasized on the fundamental, yet crucial role alumni continues to play in nurturing the next generation of students within Singapore Management University. Indeed, while TMC started off as a student-student mentoring initiative, alumni are more than often well-placed to provide very practical support and advice to students looking to carve out a career in whichever industry which they might be interested in!

Our Alumni Relations Directors Lim Shang Yi, then addressed the crowd in quick succession before providing more insights on how the speed-dating would be conducted. Shang brought in the analogy of life as a jigsaw puzzle – more often than not, we do not know how to form up the middle portion and what will consist of it. Thus, this is where the role of alumni enters as they are seen as having done up their jigsaw puzzle successfully. Yet, Shang also urges our students to continue questioning themselves if that “jigsaw” is really what they want to achieve in life?

Everything these days is about speed. Faster broadband, faster meals, faster cars and even quicker dates. It is no surprise that speed-networking – similar to the concept of speed-dating – has emerged in the business world. That leaves TMC with the idea of testing it out, and with very positive results!

Each member of TMC got to rotate amongst professionals within industries which they are interested to carve out a career in over a period of 15minutes per session. Conversations were off to a great start – of course, with some wine and beer as company 🙂

Mentoring is a smart use of resources, connecting students and alumni for support, learning and networking as they move through their university experience and enter working life. It may seem a far cry for TMC to have a vision today to impact the lives of every single student in SMU, but every single effort from each one of us counts towards something at this current stage.

If you ever felt like your single effort is only worth like a single drop in the ocean, always remember that every single river, every single ocean, and every single waterfall, always starts with a single drop! Cheers to a splendid end to 2018 and thank you to our hardworking Exco members for their efforts in giving back to our community throughout this semester 🙂 The Mentoring Circle would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to SMU Office of Alumni Relations for their unwavering support throughout the entire term.
