At TMC, we’re all about creating meaningful connections and spurring each other on to greater heights. We started out our Industry Coffee Chats this week, beginning with the Finance and Analytics industry. These sessions serve to engage mentors and mentees on a frequent basis and we hope it helps to foster friendships too.

Getting to know each other better was the additional bonus apart from finding out about the industries. It’s nice to see how everyone willingly took some time out of this busy mid-term season to sit down and have coffee.

Here are some of the thoughts from the Coffee Chats:

I initially intended to pop by the coffee chat to snap some shots and check if everyone was comfortable. To my surprise, there were already 15 mentors and mentees engaging in conversation, and there was no need for me to bring any of them together since they’re such a warm bunch. I proceeded to greet a handful of members that I knew, before sitting across Nathaniel at the bench. That was when we started engaging in a long conversation about certain career prospects, as well as his experiences in the private banking sector. It allowed me to finally understand what private banking was all about, especially since I was contemplating on applying for a summer internship in one of the banks. Really thankful for this great opportunity to meet mentors who were so willing to share and impart as much knowledge as they could to the mentees!

I was able to interact with a number of the juniors and met new people in a chill and comfortable setting. Through our conversations, I was able to share my journey and experience, which will hopefully benefit them in the future. Speaking to the juniors also made me remember the times when I was still fresh in university, confused and unsure of what to do. As a senior and mentor, I’m glad that I was provided such a platform to allow us to guide juniors, and help them find their direction in a chill environment. Looking forward to attending more of these sessions!

The coffee chat was a really enriching and eye-opening session. The seniors were very open to sharing their finance experiences and career choices. Professional life aside, we also got to discuss our personal goals and ambitions in life. It was truly heartening to be able to meet genuine and caring seniors.

One of the reasons why I decided to join TMC was to be able to search for advice and knowledge from more established mentors and learn from my fellow mentees.
While it is unnerving to enter a room full of strangers, I’m glad I took the opportunity to get to know the rest of my TMC members better from this Analytics Coffee Chat.
Aside from sharing how analytics can be applied to a whole span of industries, the mentors gave general advice on for what companies to look out for, and how to prepare for interviews, which personally was very useful. What made this experience great was the back and forth QnA between the mentees and the mentors, where “I’m not sure..” was quickly followed with “I believe you can do ….”
It was definitely heartening to know that the mentors are out there looking for us, and I can’t wait for the next coffeechat to start another conversation sometime soon!

The coffee chat was highly interactive and enjoyable. It’s great to see juniors who highly driven where everyone shares their experiences in school as well as their career aspiration. Many interesting questions were asked during the coffee chat, which allows us to learn from each other’s experiences. Looking forward to the more os such coffee chats in future where we could share our experience in a casual environment.

Exciting times to look forward to! The next two Coffee Chats will on the topics of the Marketing and Consulting Industries. Keep a look out and all the best to everyone for mid-terms!
