Compass@Campus is a group of senior executives, professionals and entrepreneurs who believe in the value of developing future-ready servant leaders of integrity who will bring positive impact to our society.

They do this through pro bono educational programmes such as the IMPACT Leadership Mentoring Programme which prepares the next generation to rise to the challenges ahead.

A key success factor is their pool of committed and distinguished mentors who are passionate about the next generation.

TMC dedicated 3 full Saturdays with 18 over mentors from Compass@Campus to guide our members through their intensive and meaningful program. Here, we take a step back as a few of our mentors/mentees reflect upon all the multiple learnings received over the 3 weeks. Let’s hear what they have to say! 🙂

As a final year student, this workshop has been useful in helping me reflect on my academic journey thus far. The stories and insights shared by the experienced mentors have also helped in shaping my goals and priorities as I prepare to embark on my career soon.

Paul Cheung, School of Business, Year 4 Mentor

The workshop has been an invaluable learning experience. We were graced with the participation of seasoned veterans in various industries, who didn’t hold back in contributing insights from their life experiences, and that really elevated the level of discussion and learning to the next level. This coupled with fantastic research material, behavioural theories and actionable frameworks, have really allowed me to apply my key takeaways from the workshop to not only my own personal development, but to my mentee’s as well.

Justin Chew, School of Business, Year 3 Mentee

TMC Academy is a highly enriching course. Over the past 2 weeks, both the instructors and our mentors have taught us invaluable life-lessons and they are willing to share their experience with us. The idea of discovering our purpose in life and the ability to fail forward are thought-provoking and I hope that more people could learn from Dr Darren Chua as well as mentors from Compass@Campus.

Tan Kim Chye, School of Information Systems, Year 3 Mentor

It was a really useful workshop, with many intriguing speakers and multiple interactive activities. The most value add definitely came with speaking to the experienced mentors 1 on 1, who shared nuggets of great advice with their many anecdotes and stories.

Bhagirath, School of Business, Year 4 Mentor

Coming down for 3 Saturdays in a row was well worth the valuable lessons taken away from TMC Academy. I would truly like to thank the patient, kind and knowledgeable mentors for taking up their valuable time to deliver such an enriching curriculum. While it brought many fresh perspectives on significant issues in the corporate world, it was a timely reminder for me to always do my reflections and not to neglect personal growth. Thanks again for a great workshop!

Brandon Ho, School of Business, Year 2 Mentee

TMC academy has not only given me the opportunity to discover more about my personality traits but also taught me on how to communicate with others better. I am glad that through the sharing by the mentors, I was able to gain trust and meaningful relationships during my internship. Overall, it was an informative and enriching workshop for me! Couldn’t have spent my Saturdays any better!

Stephanie Lee, School of Business, Year 2 Mentee

The TMC-IMPACT workshop has been really enriching. Guided by several IMPACT mentors, the 3-days workshop has given me several takeaways, such as helping me to redefine my priorities in life, effectively search out my personality traits, techniques in handling different personalities, ability to identify and tame emotions etc.

Ng Han Ying, School of Accountancy, Year 3 Mentor

The IMPACT Leadership Mentoring Programme has provided me with great insights on life. The mentors engaged us in deeply meaningful conversations to spur our thinking, inspiring us to ascertain our priorities in life, mentoring us on techniques of how to deal with others, as well as the need to overcome failure.

Shawn Lee Bin, School of Business, Year 1 Mentee

As a graduating student, TMC Academy was a fruitful experience with dedicated mentors who shared their personal stories and experiences. The provided me with a safe and guided environment to do something that I’ve chosen to avoid over the years – to reflect.
Looking back at my SMU journey allowed me to see how I have grown over the 4 years – what aspects were done right, what could have been done better, what is to come beyond the semester and how to better prepare for possible adversities in the working world!

Joan Tan, School of Social Sciences, Year 4 Mentor

The workshop served as a reminder for all of us to take a step back and reflect – which is important in an environment where it is easy to burn out. I believe that the theories and tools taught will help us to not just exist in this world, but to truly live. Thank you to the mentors for their time and generosity in sharing their experiences. Their sincerity and open-heartedness have really touched and inspired me to challenge myself to be a better person for myself, and those around me.

Angeline Ho, School of Accountancy, Year 4 Mentor

TMC academy has given me the opportunity to learn from distinguished mentors and senior level executives through their stories and sharing on personal development and showed us how we are able to live a life that is beyond examinations and grades, through values that drives us through our daily task so that we are able to achieve excellence in whatever we do. Really grateful to have Mr Tan Chuan Jin for our finale and see how he became who he is today through the different experience that he has been through with the set of believes and values the anchored him throughout the journey.

Zen Tan, School of Information Systems, Year 1 Mentee

I was pleasantly surprised by the level of commitment the mentors have given to this workshop. It was no easy feat organising the large number of experienced professionals to come together and prepare a structured course for us. This shows the passion they have in impacting mentees’ lives. It was truly inspiring as I get to learn more from the experiences they had gone through in their lives and this helps me to form a better understanding in how to guide my own life and my mentee’s life as well. Most importantly, they provided a good reflection on how we should really live our lives, which is definitely much more than just pursuing some numbers like GPA or getting our first million!

Kan Shing Chun, School of Business, Year 4 Mentor

Through lighthearted interactions with mentors and fellow mentees, I was encouraged to reexamine my personal values and redefine what success meant to me. The mentors were very passionate about sharing personal anecdotes and with a wealth of experience, they played a key role in facilitating our lively discussions! I now understand myself better can better relate to others!

Crystal Chng, School of Business, Year 2 Mentee

The TMC academy workshop has been a journey nothing short of empowerment. While the club excels at academic and corporate guidance, we shouldn’t forget that mentoring has a more human side to it as well. It has been a blessing to be able to hear from the mentors about topics such as failing forward and defining what success really means for each one of us – issues not frequently discussed but nonetheless crucial to one’s self-development and growth as we forge our way into the corporate world.

Rebecca Ong, School of Business, Year 4 Mentor

I gained many insightful pieces of advice from this series of workshops! I learnt about the different perspectives that many of the mentors had regarding work, from both their past experiences and current jobs. They shared an abundance of things that are really important in the workplace; things that most of my peers (both students and alumni) had not really vocalized yet. I believe this is from many years of experience, and being in senior management positions. Beyond the advice, I also felt that interacting with the mentors, at a shocking yet appreciated intimate level of conversation truly changed my perspective on older mentors.

Denise Ong, School of Social Sciences, Year 1 Mentee

My experience with the Leadership Mentoring Programme so far has been fruitful. As a final year student majoring in Finance, it’s easy to be on cruise control- a mode of journeying through school chasing the success that’s defined by the people around us. During the programme, we were asked numerous reflective questions and put through various activities that both imparted important life lessons as well as promoted deeper thought into leading a more fulfilling life. What benefitted me the most was learning from hindsight through the experiences of the kind mentors that volunteered their time.

James Lim, School of Business, Year 4 Mentor

Throughout the series of workshops conducted by Compass@Campus, I felt like I had found myself more in terms of my personality and goals. What I had learnt is extremely practical and applicable to my life, be it in work or personal life. I really enjoyed the activities and would definitely recommend it to my friends.

Chan Jia Jun, School of Accountancy, Year 2 Mentee

This workshop effectively illustrated the heart of mentoring, which goes beyond the surface of “let me tell you what you need to do to succeed”. Instead, through the use of thought-provoking activities and effective guidance, this workshop beautifully illustrated how important soft skills like trust and integrity, emotional intelligence, managing of team dynamics etc. are not just abstract concepts, but are practical implementations that are pertinent in establishing our core values, our behaviours, and our overall identity.

Tan Peng Peng, School of Social Sciences, Year 3 Events Director

There are many things in life that you won’t know you had the need for it until its made. TMC-IMPACT programme was something that I really didn’t expect benefitting so much from. Being open to each other and listening to great life advice from mistakes and regrets from successful mentors reminds us to reevaluate our life priorities. It was truly an insightful journey.

Jeric Tan, School of Economics, Year 3 Partnerships Director

The workshop was a timely reminder to evaluate our long-term goals in life, and to define what success really means to each of us. I appreciate the engagement with the mentors who were passionate in sharing their experiences, and of course, their commitment for the three day-long sessions.

Toh Ji Wei, School of Business, Year 3 Mentor Engagement Director

This 3-part series workshop took up 3 full Saturdays for our members – but the lessons derived will not likely have been picked up within the 4 walls of a classroom. I am truly pleased that the mentors have further reminded us on the importance of staying grounded to find the true meaning of life, whilst fighting hard for our dreams. The Mentoring Circle was formed based on values, and the insightful sessions indeed dug deep to allow everyone to discover themselves and understand what ultimately defines them, especially in tough times or when encountering failures. More often than not, we cannot control the circumstances that we are in, but we can always control how we deal with each circumstance. Sometimes, we all need reminders that we are good enough and we are more than capable to achieve whatever we want to achieve 🙂 Heartfelt thanks to all 18 mentors for their immense dedication and support throughout the weeks!

Tan Xin Hao, School of Business, Year 4 President
